I got rejected from most of the internships I applied to (ironically, my first choice was Nickelodeon). I think that all of the smaller things on my resume related to media or communication in general made me a good candidate for what I do have. If there's any local stuff in your area, even little stuff like volunteering for film festivals or working on a college newspaper or something, it all looks good. Having any experience in any media job will help you get into anything else, and big companies hardly ever take people without previous experience. More important than, say, a drawing portfolio unless you're going for some strict design position.
My particular job is basically covering scripts for live-action movies. This is going to sound like bullshit, but it helps to have seen a lot of movies and have the ability to draw parallels between what you're looking at and what you've already seen. Stay on top of all of media; being "only in cartoons" is a luxury that /co/ anons don't seem to understand. You'll find that consuming a lot of live-action media will really raise your standards of quality as well, even if you want to be just in animation.
