people often point to Adventure Time for being the source of where all the calarts shit comes from, and in a way they are right. Rebbeca Sugar came from that show, and they are right since it was one of the shows that really pushed QUIRKY humor and relationship drama
But Adventure Time still had a lot of escapist themes in it, something that is always fun in cartoons, something modern cartoons lack
Regular Show however was "regular life but with a twist". Cartoons like that have existed forever, its nothing new. But RS popularized it again, and how important relationship drama was for it from the start are problems. Not to mention the art style, remember how everyone was calling out how similar Gravity Falls looked to Regular Show?
People like to think positively about how Quintel viewed that cartoons don't need to treat kids like idiots who need fart jokes every second, but how his peers viewed that is kids don't need to be treated like kids. That they don't need to create a character that kids can latch onto, they can just insert themselves into a show and talk about their relationship problems.
