But that personality type doesn't vanish from humanity just because it doesn't have power at a given point. You still have such people growing up, and when they do they look for a place they can be thin-skinned prudes *and feel that they are moral people doing so*.
So about 2010ish you have a whole generation of thin-skinned prudes growing up looking for somewhere they can do this, and as Obama-style liberalism is what is popular and powerful they latch on to that and form the modern social justice movement.
Fifty years ago they *would* have been fundamentalist conservatives, but because that isn't trendy or popular they're sjws instead.
Humans don't change much over the centuries, but the ways we justify our beliefs do.
