Probably a mistake to release this on the tail end of Infinity War, but i'm sure plenty will go and see it anyway. Plus, they'll probably insert tony stark/cap/etc in the post credits scenes or something and you know some people will see it just for that shit.

Star Wars fatigue is hitting because we've gotten four mediocre movies in as many years and people are getting burned out. Star Wars' success always hinged on the wait between movies. A Star Wars movie coming out was a big cultural event that people waited years for. Now it's just another regular thing like a Marvel movie. You can't build hype for a Star Wars movie when people are still digesting the one that came before.

Solo flopped because people didn't want a Han Solo prequel, because it's pointless. We know he'll meet Chewie and make the kessel run in 12 parsecs and win the millenium falcon in a card game and become a scoundrel smuggler. And nothing drastic can happen to any of the characters the audiences care about because they HAVE to be where they are at the beginning of A New Hope.

Rogue One worked better because it was an entirely new cast. Anything can happen to the characters so there's more potential for interest.

You didn't like rogue one? Why not? I actually liked that movie far more than Force Awakens. It wasn't perfect, but I liked how it showed that the rebels themselves were far from perfect good guys, but rather troubled terrorists. I also liked the whole theme that the Empire's efforts to crush the rebellion through brute force only causes it to become stronger. Do you remember that one scene when they first start the attack on the tropical planet, and all the imperial officers at the top of the archive stare out the window in shock, unable to believe this is happening. I thought that was absolutely perfect, these people decided to join the Empire because they thought it was safe.

It was also kinda neat to me how the final action sequence was evocative of the war in the Pacific, with it opening with a shocking surprise attack, fighting on a tropical island environment, and ends with the use of a super weapon that kills everyone.

I saw this with my brother and he complained about that, saying the movie was basically "that one interesting week Han Solo had" because he meets Chewie, Lando, gets the Falcon, and does the Kessel run all in the film. Personally that didn't bother me so much, I was more annoyed by Han randomly finding religion and giving the loot to some random broad because she said "hey this criminal gang you're working for are bad guys". Of course they fucking are, he knows that. He also knows that if he screws them over they'll send bounty hunters to find him and kill him. Han is a self interested dick in the original star wars and goes through a redemption arc. This movie should have had him end up that way by the end so he can be redeemed later.

Han was still a self serving asshole by the first movie then he meets people that make him change.

But then Force Awakens fucks that up too.

I find Rogue One very boring. The third act (or more specifically the battle) is obviously the best part of the movie but the rest is this grating slog filled with forced fanservice and edgyiness thinking its "bold" for killing of all the main characters despite not caring about them at all. I also find the film has no substance at all, say the fuck whatever you want about the ST but I thought Force Awakens was solid and revitalized the franchise (until now) and TLJ for all the shit it gets I still enjoy Luke's, Kylo's and Rey's storyline and I find the cinematography kino, those movies may feel corporatized and has lost all of the magic that the OT had but I still enjoy them for what they are: fun family adventure movies whereas Rogue One feels like the Thor: The Dark World of Star Wars movies.

I will give it that its better than the Prequels

at least woody harrelson was good in it, and I really liked the whole sequence on the mining planet where they trigger the slave rising. So the movie didn't feel like a totally wasted trip to me.

Also the card room scene was alright, but I kept thinking about how it came nowhere close to the one in the sting.

what the hell? You complain that rogue one felt like it had forced fanservice, but FA was LITERALLY just that. It was absolutely the exact same plot as the original star wars and couldn't help itself from shoving everything from that movie in your face at all times.

I've never minded remakes, but they have to do something new. When a movie is literally just the same thing over again it frustrates me to no end.

Never said Force Awakens was great or perfect but at as much as the plot was so derivative of A New Hope that it made the movie predictable but at least the fanservice actually had a purpose (The Millennium Falcon becomes the main mode of transport for our heroes in the movie, Han and Chewie being one of the main characters and R2-D2 having the map of Anch To). Meanwhile what was the point of Dr Evazan and Ponda Baba being on Jedha for? or AT ST AT ST?

I have no idea who dr evazan or ponda baba are, and are you complaining that the same Empire is using the same military equipment from the other movies? Because that seems pretty inane to me.

One thing that did bother me was that big battle scene on the desert planet, because the rebels have too easy of a time fighting the imperial troopers in a stand up fight, they're guerrillas they shouldn't be able to do that. Have you ever seen the movie Kelly's Heroes? I remember there's one scene where a character is describing the destructive power of enemy tanks, and says something along the lines of "do you have any idea what these things are capable of, once these tanks get rolling they're gonna blow that whole town to pieces including us". I was thinking of that since the imperial troopers have a tank that like fires once and then gets destroyed. It would have been better if they had just had it indiscriminately firing and blowing the whole place to hell.

Dr Evazan and Ponda Babbu were the guys in A New Hope that Obi Wan murdered in the Cantina, in Rogue One all they do is bump into Jyn and give us the same line they spoke in the first movie. As for the AT ST, its not appropriate to use such gigantic weapons on what was basically a small merry band of Rebels, its like using a tank during a small scale street level riot
