So are you cool with the depiction of Beatrice's mother getting a lobotomy "because of her womanly emotions" too?
You can candy a lemon. You can make it an actual treat. In and of itself, the fact that people ate the things isn't because of some sort of tyrannical sexism. Maybe they thought it was healthy at the time, but then again John Harvey Kellog used to sew a man's foreskin to his penis with silver wire because he was a doctor and he said that was healthy.
The show presented this shit with context, man. I acknowledge that they ate candied lemons, and that there are plausible reasons to eat lemons as snacks. I was on that page from square one.
What I don't get is how it becomes gender commentary or what's funny about it when you have this backdrop of legitimately horrible shit and people saying "we're doing all this because of your gender". This, also in the season where gun control is enacted to specifically prevent women from getting guns.
All I'm saying is, the show presented this lemon thing as "a girl's snack", but I had to look up where the idea came from because that didn't really make any sense.
First you have to acknowledge it was an actual treat that may have been prepared in a few ways. Then you have to identify some people back then thought it was a healthy snack. Finally you have to arrive at the idea that, in the period, a girl might be encouraged to eat lemons because it was thought to be healthy, and not to torture her for having a vagina. The joke buried in there MAYBE is that it's a willful exaggeration of something people did, painted in a light to make it seem as sexist as they could make it.
That's comedy to you. I don't know.
