Are there any examples of the Anti Thundercats Roar idea working out well? As in, taking a goofy joke show and trying to make it more serious and action oriented?

Only pic related comes to mind as something that even tried the concept

Definitely a lot more serious than a lot of scooby doo shows and movies, but didn't try to make it something it just wouldn't work as.

Some media does grow up with its audience.

Harry potter would be a great example. I read the first 3 in fifth grade and as I got older, the books got darker.

One piece started for smaller children, being very goofy. Now days its expected to hold its adult audience.

I think Legend of Korra wanted to be the more serious sequel.

Honestly, I thought Sonic Underground had some pretty good ideas. The singing gimmick was a little goofy, I'll admit, but Sonia and Manic gave Sonic some personalities he could legitimately bounce off of, whereas Tails was more... "generic side-kick/doting little brother", and Amy was "annoying wannabe girlfriend". Plus, there's something to be said for setting it in kind of a "prequel to SatAM" time-slot; before Robotnik has ruined Mobius by roboticizing everybody, but after he's taken over and is slowly squeezing the life and hope from the world. It's a setup that could have been played for a lot of drama and tragedy.

Not EXACTY what you stated, but GI Joe Resolute. Took what was originally kids cartoon with some silly elements and no actual harmful violence done to humans, and turned it into a more violent and more realistic story aimed at teens and adults.
