You also missed that the biggest inspiration/references by far are to Revolutionary Girl Utena, the Pearl vs. Pearl fight being an actual shot-by-shot exactly faithful recreation of the duels from Utena (on purpose), plus now the equally blatant shadow outlines with hair from Utena from the most recent episodes followed by a metric fuckton of more subtle things from Utena.

Anyway I don't give a shit. Anime is pretty normie and mainstream now. No different from references to any other pop culture, which nearly all cartoons do, and have done since the very beginning (how many Looney Toons shorts had celebrities and movies from the time, sometimes featured so heavily that was the main focus?).

Except it's not just that one shot from Utena by a longshot though, that entire fight sequence is filled with shots that are a trace of big stock footage Utena duel shots used over and over again in RGU (that anime's duels were repetitive and heavily reused stock footage).

When it first aired people made side by sides of the whole sequence and overlays that made it obvious beyond question as it included some pretty idiosyncratic shots all exactly copied. If you look around you can see it's just like the Snow White dancing and fox Maid Marian being rotoscoped from the same footage shit.

I'm not crticizing SU though, they're very open about that being an intentional scene trace, it's a deliberate homage and Easter Egg not a ripoff or anything. They're upfront about it. Sugar is open about her inspirations and Utena along with Invader Zim are probably the main two. I'm sure the Utena folks still floating around are just flattered, not offended at all.

I think if you take a choreography or series of shots from something and put it into a context that is completely different, that does not diminish creativity at all.
For many cases, a precise choreography or sequence of shots is far less important to the show as a whole than the character constellations, interactions and dialogue.
And if you can use an effective sequence of motions that has been famously done before, that is absolutely fine.
SU has mostly used these scenes to say things about the characters through the comparison, too.
That's much different from lazy Family Guy scenes ripping iconic scenes whole cloth from extremely famous movies with one-liners, music cues and costumes as a bit with no bearing on the narrative.
SU is building in a nod to something the intended audience may have never seen or even heard of, often underlining character traits and subtle themes. FG just banks on recognition and nostalgia to give a pointless joke any meaning at all.

Tell the audience two characters are secretly siblings by giving them the same haircuts as Luke and Leia and you have my admiration.

Have you seen the two scenes? It’s not just the poses. They’re very strongly similar in a lot of ways, and the SU is clearly meant to be a “reference” or “homage” to the Cowboy Bebop one. They’re both very similar situations, same concept, have the same tone, some very similar lines, and a lot of the same shots. It’s clearly not a coincidence, at the very least.

You can go ahead and say “omg not everything is anime reference!!” and that’s fine, but OP’s example is a bad example to complain about.

But this was just about the only chance anyone ever had to do that one that way.
The situation is so incredibly specific and dependent on VHS as a medium that I'm not sure anyone will have the opportunity again. Especially in this age of ceaseless documentation.

Ballmastrz is a gonzo comedy series that uses anime tropes and aesthetics to try to make you laugh. Their anime references are actually part of the joke of their absurdist world instead of framing scenes from another anime and pass off as moments of the show.

I don't recall Ballmastrz flat out taking a scene or composition from anime and treating it as it's own.

It's certainly inspired by anime, in particular Gainax's crazy late 90s aesthetic, but it's doing it's own thing and has it's own animation style

I see it differently. Not only did Genndy have the balls to actually send Jack to the past (instead of a cop-out that the episodic nature of the original show forced him to do several times), but he showed the ambiguity of it through Ashi ceasing to exist as a symbol of euphoria fading away and the realization of what you might have done settling in. The entire series Jack has a set goal of going back to the past which seems like it's going to magically fix everything, but when he does get back to the past and kill Aku, all he can do is hope that he has made the right choice, never knowing for sure. To me, if Jack had another "well I can't risk choosing the possible greater good option, better do a relatively small and safe good deed instead to help me sleep at night" episode, this would mean the show hasn't matured in the slightest.

When suburban commando opened with the star wars battleship fly over, it was in a slightly different context and not about paying homage to the original work and was a ripoff
When spaceballs did it, it was parody and a homage.

when the context is different and it isn't lifting the scene but rather just an artist refusing to put the hours/days into posing and blocking an entire scene then it is a ripoff
when it doesn't fit the characters or causes the characters to not contribute any new style of fighting/emotion then it is a ripoff
if SU artists do it, it is ripoff.
copyright cases are littered with precedence where identical context is regarded as parody.

Greg having a similar pose to what's-her-face for 2 seconds doesn't make the whole scene a ripoff. Yes, roastie, SU has done this too. Several Homeworld gems are basically recolors of other characters, and Lapis is flat out stolen from a character in Golden Bat. Your tiny brain might even notice this shot looks verrrry similar to a recent SU episode.
