She tried backing out of it, but the other Diamonds wouldn't let her. So she increasingly made more and more problems for herself and them, thinking it would work, until she was desperate enough to think that faking her death would work.
She didn't understand love. It's possible that the other Diamonds never showed it overtly, but clearly she was unable to pick up nuance. It's the same with Greg.
Blue IMMEDIATELY connects to what Greg is saying. She recognizes him as a being who grieves (literally for the same person as her). But Rose is shown time and time again to have trouble understanding Greg.
Pink came out wrong. She came out small and immature and clearly a little bit autistic (I don't mean in the insulting way, but as being unable to empathize with others).
But she understood that there were others like her, who didn't belong, who didn't live up to expectations in Gem society. She wanted for them all to live free on the Earth, to be who they wanted to be. We see this with how she reacted to Garnet, and how she supposedly reacted when Amethyst came out overcooked.
She was immature. She clearly had no ability to predict how the other Diamonds would act. She was in over her head and kept making the problem worse.
