Math teacher here.

One of the things you were probably taught in school was basically to just add numbers below 10. And go from there.

Say you have 13 and 29 and you want to add them. You would add 9 and 3 to get 12. You put 2 in that column and "carry the one" you add 2 and 1 to get 3. Carry the 1 to make it 4 and give the answer of 42. To you this makes perfect sense.

However, "new math" is focused on quick(er) solutions that are based around using "easy" numbers. Lets take another look at that problem. 13 + 29. The 9 in 29 means that you had to carry a one. You ended up using 10, 20, and 12 together to get 42. New math however would tell you to see that 29 is close to 30 and do the problem as 13+30. Which gives you 43, and requires you to carry 0 digits. You dont have to add 9 to 3 and carry the one anymore. At 43 you now subtract the amount you added to 29 to make 30 (which is 1) giving you 43-1 = 42. The correct answer.

This style of math made you use 13, 30 and -1 to solve the problem instead of 10, 12, and 20. Some people think this is easier. Some people do not.

Personally I prefer the old way. Maybe because im biased, but also because I feel that its good practice for when you encounter things like 4834734+1938748. Do these numbers round to something easy? No not really. But all of you could probably solve it by just breaking it down. 8 +4 carry the 1, 4+3 + carried 1, etc.

Not really. Germany's rocket program in WWII was more advanced than our own. We recruited a few rocket scientists. Saying they were all imported is a pretty big exaggeration.

But it doesn't. The Japanese word is literally just the number, there is no equation in it. The only difference is they put the single digit name in front of the word for the tens place and so on (goju five tens) and english slighty modifies the sound (five tens fifty)
Only eleven and twelve have names.

The first box has 10 squares with 8 filled in. That's a representation of 8.

The 9 dots underneath it mean 9. Obviously.

The arrow leads to a second box with 8 circles. Then 2 that are lighter colored. 10 circles in total. The 9 circles below the boxes are now 7.

The equation is thus 8+2+7 = 17.
The point of this problem is supposed to be telling you to subtract 2 from 9 to give you 7. Such that you can add that 2 to the 8 to give you 10. Then you do 10+7 to give you 17. You do this because new math is focused on creating 10's and 5's, while also making sure you never "carry the one"

I hate that common core has become associated with this new math. Obviously they're being pushed together and thus linked. But it's still infuriating, because common core at its heart is a good idea. Nationalizing the curriculum makes perfect sense. The idea that you can take algebra in florida, then move to north carolina only to discover they taught slightly different things/covered different material/taught everything in a way you didn't get taught in. Means that you'd be up shit creek come algebra 2.

Standardizing what we teach per class, and how it gets taught (within reason of course. Students learn differently.) Is so sensible that most people already assume that's how it works. Even though it wasn't a thing until common core.

They are required to learn a great deal of math. People who are good at math, however, can study computer-sciences, which pays twice as much. This result in all the math teachers being pretty bad at math.

Nah. Most people would add 6 and 8 to get 14 then add 30 60 and 14 to get 104. Everyone over like 25 spend hours doing long addition in the classroom. That shits baked into us by now.

Parents aren't supposed to do their kid's homework for them, but provide them with 1-on-1 tutoring to help them through problems they didn't understand while in class.

Teachers don't do 1-on-1 help for kids because their class sizes have expanded to 50 students or more; they can basically only provide lectures with limited QnA sessions at the end (for 8 year-olds). The parents are responsible for picking up the slack to help their kids understand these problems.

Depends on what program you go in for desu.

You can teach math up to high school level with any related mathematics degree. Even an economics degree qualifies you for high school level math.

But if you go in for say "Secondary education with math focus" as your major in college? Prepare to take calc 3 at a minimum. You're definitely going to be taking linear algebra, and real analysis too.

in fact, I still have my old USF undergrad checklist here. Requirements included MAC 2311: calc 1. MAC 2312: calc 2. And STA 2023 introductory statistics. This was for the undergrad. The actual bachelors degree requires calc 3 as well.

It was the same for me until high school geometry class, where that specific teacher demanded homework problems in a very specific stylized way. Right down to the tables and numbering style, marking things off if the format was wrong, regardless of the answer.

Took me a little while to get used to it, but in the end I think it forced me to think about the problems from a different tack. I think there's value to to learning methods exactly for that reason.

When you get to real proper maths you're handed a problem you've never seen before in class and have no idea how to solve. The real skill is in coming up with different angles on how to approach the problem.

I think it might be a thing that technology has changed. Back in the day the answer to this was "you wont always have a calculator" but now all my students have cell phones with them built in.

Yes, that's fine. Nobody disagrees with that. The idea of standardization is that the kids in the advanced math class in one high school covers the same material that the kids in the advanced math class in the school in the neighboring district cover.

just one of the issues with standardization is there will be some AP history class in a rich mostly white school district where they learn that George Washington was the first president, and then they watch Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, and that's the extent of the curriculum, and they all get easy A's and college credit.

While some poor remedial history class in the next county over is working out of history books from the 70s, covers more material, and no AP nothing.

The primary concerns I've heard is that it's too complicated for someone in elementary who is just grasping the basic ideas of math, which is a valid argument in my opinion. No kid will be able to think around like that, and in the long run forcing critical/theoretical thinking in them will make them less likely to be those types of thinkers in the future, as they themselves don't actually come up with it or appreciate its value. You can only know something's a shortcut if you've seen the main road after all.

The best way to teach maths is still with Legos. In our schools, Legos were commonly used in many classes, but especially in maths. This isn't even a national education system thing, just a local schlick. The idea is that legos can be used to visualize many parts of basic everyday life math, very well up untill the 12th grade. It start with simple stuff like multiplication and addition and may end up with solving a system of formulas or analyzing functions. Just label the legos correctly and you have a nice support tool to explain lots of stuff.

Usually different base systems stem from some particular object that is being used.

Like I want to say the aztecs used base 20 because that was how many of some item would go into a bundle. So you count up to 20 and then you have 1 bundle instead of 20 whatevers.

So if you have 86 it's 4 bundles and 6 whatevers. so you write it as 4 6 instead. Base 10 makes sense to you because it's what you've learned. It's not better or worse than any other system really.

When I was learning to add numbers in elementary school, I was having trouble with adding 8 and 9 to things. My dad taught me a trick: just add 10 and go down by 1 (or 2). We use binary (base-2) in computing because at the lowest level computers store information as 1s and 0s. More specifically, the very basic circuits in a computer can only be in one of two states: "off" or "on". Nothing in between. This is a bad meme that needs to die. If you're using base 12. How do you write 13? It's 1 1. That is, it's 1*12 + 1 = 13. But when you write it out it looks like 11. Which is also a number in your base system. Which means you have to do dumbshit like put lines after every digit to make sure it's understood that it's a different column not an individual number. 1|1 becomes 13. Whereas 11 is just 11. That's asinine as fuck.

Everything lower than base 10 is at least relatively fine. 11 in base 2 is just 3 because there's no number 11 in base 2. But that still means you have to do more complex math. 1010 is 0*1 + 1*2 + 0*2^2 + 1*2^3 or 8+2 = 10. That's a very fucking lengthy way to write 10, and requires you to do multiplication just to write a fucking number.

"but anon base 10 is multiply too!" Sure is. But you're multiplying with fucking 10's. So you just add a god damned 0 on the end until you're done. Quick what's 2^23? Who fucking knows. What's 10^23? its 1 with 23 0's after it. You dont even have to do the math.

Fuck bases higher than 10 and fuck bases lower than 10 too. They're all bullshit and they know it.

Except that's blatantly false. You're still "carrying" the one to subtract it at the end. Getting to 43 doesn't require you to carry anything, but that's the wrong answer. So instead of carrying the 1 to the next step of the problem and using it right away, you're carrying it way to the end of the problem where you have to subtract it to get the correct answer.

Not only is this not any "quicker" than doing it the old way, it's actually slower and more error-prone once your sums get more complex (like when adding more than 2 numbers).

That's actually how I do it. Kinda like doing the math backwards like some kind of weeb. I think I started teaching myself that method in late elementary school but didn't use it regularly until I was in high school.
I remember teaching myself different ways to do math as a kid in order to solve them faster in my head. We had little 1v1 math solving competitions in my class to see who can solve fairly simple math problems the fastest in our heads.

The problem is just saying "show me step 1". The teacher added step 2 in their explanation to show the kid why it's ok to make 10 first and still get the final result. It's not about teaching the kid to add single digit numbers- it's about teaching the trick. Since the kid clearly doesn't know what "make 10" means, the teacher is trying to explain that it's just part of the process.

I get it if someone struggles with calculus or algebra, especially the more advanced stuff. But when you're teaching a child basic arithmetic that's counter-intuitive and which confuses mathematicians, it's probably a sign that you've gone in the wrong direction.

Too costly for this generation, unfortunately. Since the working adults who are keeping society running are stuck in the way of doing it the base 10 numbers and can't really afford to spend time to learn base 12 themselves, it's not efficient to teach kids exclusively how to use base 12 either.

Most people that go into teaching in this country, which isn't much that's why there's classes with over 50 students now, didn't want to go into teaching. That was just the back up plan or they're too stupid to make it in any other field. I don't have any sort of degree beyond a high school degree and I could probably have a long job as a teacher do to the fact they are so sort on people I'd never get edged out by anyone better.

"new math"
8+3 =11 carry the on2
7+6+1 = 14 carrt the one
4+1+1 = 6
for 641 but you'd have to remember the math you previously did, which is just floating until you pull everything together

common core
you take your 473.
take 7 from 168 and add it to 473 to get 480 and 161.
take 20 from 161 add it to 480 to get 500 and 141.
add 141 to 500 and get 641.
But this way, you only have to keep 2 numbers in your memory at any one time.

Anon, I'm just explaining how common core works, as in, I'm breaking down each step into what it actually is
Go to the website and they do talk about introducing algebraic concepts at grade 1.

In order to get 473 to the next number that is easily divisible by 10 you have to work out what number you need to add to 473 to get to 480, the next number easily divisible by 10
that is display in a number sentence by: 473+x=480
and then you subtract x from the second number in the original number sentence while adding x to the first number in the original number sentence
I'm not conflating 2 steps, I'm expressing them through algebra. I'm expressing them through algebra because the common core method seeks to use algebraic thinking, as in, "what number can you use to solve this equation?"

Common core doesn't help kids understand math. It just teaches them to break it apart and do it in their head. That doesn't help kids.
I'm not concerned about test scores, I'm concerned about whether or not the kids know how to adequately come to the right answer without doing things in their head.
If you make a mistake while doing work in your head, you can't necessarily know where you made the mistake without redoing everything in your head and comparing it to your last problem. AND if you keep making the same mistake, then you have no way to learn.
If you arrive at the answer 15 but the answer is 20, and you didn't show your work, your teacher can't point and say "here is where you did it wrong" because all of your work is in your head.
So if you keep working it out in your head the same way, you'll never not make that mistake

This and the little of "new" math I've seen seems more appropriate as "shortcuts" after learning how to to basic math. It's kinda hard to explain to someone who has no idea how addition even works.
In this example, I want to know what 8+5 is. I however know that 8+2 equals 10 and adding 10 to anything is very easy. So 5-2 leaves me with 3 that I can just talk on to the 10 and I can easily and/or quickly get 13.
I however already memorized virtually all the answers to single digits mathematics that I can quickly use to help solve math problems easily. It's however taken me since like the 3rd grade until senior year to get them all down.

I had no idea there was a "new math" or "common core" in school, as I was taught "mental math" following the rules of "base 10 simplified operations". My instructors were some of those rare decent ones who could make it entertaining, but I had no idea it was this bad elsewhere. I thought those students were just lazy or uninspired.

To solve a subtraction problem, you can get the answer by counting up towards the larger number from the smaller. The difference between the two is the answer, and so counting up gives the same result. Some of you may remember word problems asking 'find the difference' when you were in school, but the teachers probably only told you it means to subtract.

That said, teaching it from this direction makes the whole afair confusing if you haven't learned what subtraction is in the first place.

and then you add them together to get 39996
So written out
9999+9999+9999+9999 = 36+360+3600+36000=39996

vs yours which is
9999+9999+9999+9999+4 = 10000+10000+10000+10000 = 40000-4= 39996

3+6 is about as difficult as 0+0

You don't consciously do it because you understand that 0+0 = 0, but you are still doing it because you have to recognize that 10000 has 0s in most of it's decimal places

Either solving it your way or my way, they take about the same amount of time to me because even if I understand that I can add 1 to each of those 4 numbers, it still takes me the same amount of time to do that step and then add 10000 4 times and then subtract 4 as it does to add each decimal place together

Wrong for 2 reasons-
1. You don't ignore the 0s, you count the 0s and add them to the final sum. If you actually ignored the 0s you would have a much smaller number

You can't solve different equations using the same method

You're doing all of the same steps no matter what, regardless of how fast you do them. You say "ignore" when really you mean "speed through" because 0+0 is an easy thing to solve
But my argument is that 3+6 is just as easy to solve and if you're good at recognizing patterns you can easily conclude that you just add extra 9s inbetween as easily as you can conclude that you "ignore the 0s"
the latter argument I made only works for this specific type of number sentence as well

No, I mean "ignore" because there is, practically, nothing to solve. 3+6 is also easy but not in the same way, because I am still doing SOMETHING to those numbers. I'm not literally, actually, adding all the 0s in all their places but doing it really really quickly because it's really really easy... I'm just not doing anything to them at all. (You are correct that I will count the 0s afterwards, though.)

If, say, I'm operating on catastrophically little sleep or my mental processes are otherwise impaired, I may get hung up on something as simple as 3+6 or get the wrong answer momentarily. Barring complete psychological breakdown, that will never, ever happen with 0+0.

The only way you know to ignore 0 + 0 is if you've previously memorized 0+0 = 0
Which means that you've already completed this step, regardless of whether or not you mentally calculated it. It's still been calculated regardless of whether or not you thought about it.
There is something to solve, 0+0 = 0, but that's not 'not' and equation, even if the something you have to solve literally equates to 'nothing'.
You're still adding 0 to 0, even if the answer is 0 and you know the answer. It's still a step you took regardless of how fast you did it.

So, using that logic, 3+6 is just as easy if you've memorized it in the same way
You've already calculated and memorized that 3+6 =9 in the same way that you've already calculated and memorized that 0+0=0

If you don't know what 0+0 is then you cannot use that method. TO CLARIFY, 0+0 is an insanely easy equation that anyone can memorize and that you have definitely memorized. BUT that still means that you know what the summation of 0 and 0 are. That means you still technically calculated 0+0 regardless of whether you mentally did it in your head
And I'm saying that you can do the same to any two integers whose sum is less than 10

You are correct that a calculation happened at some point in the past, and it is that initial calculation that feeds my present recognition. But that does not mean that I revisit my initial calculations every time I recognize 0 in an equation. Instant recognition, which you yourself are describing, does not require this. You are not even "technically" correct on this and it does damage to your point to say that you are.
