The wrong tilt in a character's eyes can come across as down syndrome, a slightly off-center lip will come across as a birth defect, and don't even get me started on all the subtle sex identifiers in facial structure.
By contrast, animal characters just kind of look okay to us. If a race of anthropomorphic animals were looking at human anthro art, they would probably find it horrifying and think all the characters looked mentally retarded pre-ops. But we don't see that.
