>>100171243If you go by Starlin's stuff Thanos does love her.
The Yule story pretty much shows that he treated her as good as he could because he wanted Gamora to have a normal upbringing and wanted Gamora to be loyal to him out of love instead of her being loyal to him out of fear. He also didn't want her to be a psychopath because she would be hard to control.
It works because Gamora ends up caring about him and was loyal to him up until she found out how mad Thanos actually was. It also makes her dilemma about Thanos raising her to be his weapon more compelling because she feels he never really cared for her and hates how he altered her into a cyborg and used her but she also feels kinship with him.
Also Thanos never expected to care about Gamora, but he ends up loving her like a daughter and she's the only person who he would call his child. Starlin even said that other than Death Gamora is the the person Thanos feels most loyalty towards.
It also helps that in the comics Thanos didn't kill her people and that he saved Gamora from dying when her people were exterminated by the Universal Church of Truth/Badoon, especially since Gamora's first impression of him was that he was her savior.
That said read Warlock and the Infinity Watch and just everything Starlin has done with those two.
