So if suddenly the Shi'ar show up and shanghai everyone into space, that is hard to sell without appearing like the biggest shark jump in history to the casual observer.
With a reboot, they could do that stuff, but as it stands, they don't have the balls for it and I doubt they have the brains to pull it off either.
