Well, wrap it up lads. That's it.
I'm not upset about the doctor being a woman, I could have handled that.
I'm not upset about the master (or the doctor) being brown, I could have handled that.
But why can't we just have nice things? Everyone who gets involved in these properties comes in with a large eraser to undo everything that made it fun. I miss the Doctor being a strange man going on adventures and solving problems across time and space. I miss above average heroes nobly questing for glory and riches. I miss regular people rising to the occasion.
Now everything has to be the biggest thing ever, the deepest mystery, the most lore. Every protagonist has to be the best fighter, the best pilot, the most outspoken, the most progressive, the funniest and most right. Every antagonist has to be the most cruel, the most slimy, the most impotently slapstick and the most wrong. There's never any moral quandry that isn't solved by a handy deus ex machina or else the main character ignoring it completely. Every plot twist has to rewrite years, if not decades of storytelling because these new writers can't hack it and make good things, they've got to dress it up and throw it a debutante in hopes of getting any media attention.
I'm going back. I'm forgoing all new media in favor of Haggard, Burroughs and Christie novels. I'm re-embracing Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and all swashbuckling and fun detective films. And I'm not coming out until writers learn subtlety and control again.>tl;dr, I'm tired in a way sleep won't cure
