they wanted to have serious story/plotlines while also having silly slice of life episodes and discarted their monster of the week episodes
they never really committed to their serious episodes fully and ended up lacking in the end
diferent storyboarders making the episodes means that theres varrying degrees in quality in animations and writing,
the caracters will ignore any kind of development that's inconvinient to the episode, some cases will ignore basic human behaviour and logic if its not convinient

I can thingk of more but other people already said it here, first season was good for me becouse it was monster of the week and the only thing that was annoying was steven becouse he was a retard, but it wasnt that big of a deal, i think SU's main problem is wanting to be 500 things at the same time but, due to lack of talent or experience, manages to be either mediocre or just suck at all of them.
