Bullying always drove kids to suicide but the difference between now and then is social media presence, cultural changes, and more awareness in efforts to stop bullying. You're right, the reason at least in America was we thought of bullying as a part of growing up and building character, not realizing how complex and harmful it can be to children's psyche, mind you the average human frontal cortex doesn't fully mature until the age of 25. It's a good thing we're making progress because most kids who grew up getting bullied aren't becoming better as they grow up, and as proof look at /r9k/.
