We could be more but it would require removing the parts of us that MAKES us violent apes and allows us to makes us better. Compare our behaviour to several fictional extraterrestrial species (Yes, I know the comparison is slightly flawed) and you'll see that a fair amount of the ones that are capable of space travel have evolved beyond the petty tribal crap and identity shit that clogs up our species
There's also the issue of HOW to do it and whether or not it's ethical. Gene editing are quick way to do it but comes with serious risks while cybernetic augmentations/turning into a full-on inorganic robotic species will take a LONG time.
