S1 is pretty rough—what show's first season isn't?—but S2 onward has always had gorgeous backgrounds, creative new character designs, and smooth, expressive puppet-rigged animation. Like with The Boondocks and The Venture Bros., you almost forget Rick and Morty's supposed to be an [adult swim] series due to its high production value.
