One of the big ideas of Animaniacs was to parody pop culture shenanigans with current events sprinkled in, and eventually when the show garnered a fanbase, they started poking fun at those fans (e.g Please Please PLEASE Get a Life Foundation). The lingo and way of catching viewership's obviously changed for the late 2010s and 2020s, and I personally think they're looking to the social media sphere for their audience. Same general idea, poking fun at pop culture, with a different method and intended audience. I've heard loads of people online talk about it, but I've never heard immediate family or friends mention it much.
That's my take on it anyway. It wasn't avoiding politics originally, but they're a lot more on-the-nose about it now and it feels less like they're supposed to be well constructed jokes and more preaching to the audience. I can't tell if it's because the writers are trying to get easy attention from this board, or Twitter and other containment sites, or because they feel the need to insert what they think into the show with very little humor.
