I also like the twist that Genndy threw in there with the romance.
You folks can whinge all you want but romance is something most people experience and by adding this element to the show it makes Jack's character more rounded and, well, human.
It's not realistic for a virulent, perpetually young, man to wander around for 50 years and not feel a romantic urge at some point.
