I think that's tackled in the episode where she goes to therapy to some extent. She loves him because of his purity and kindness, which she doesn't receive from her own family.>If she loved him, she wouldn't have been so ashamed to hide it.
Again, in the therapy episode she is conditioned to not show affection towards him because all of the other kids laugh at her when she shows that she likes him. It sets her down her bully path.
