i've been reading Ellroy recently and it's made me wanna go back to like Hammett and Chandler and check them out.

I know we all made fun of him bc he started getting repetitive but Brubaker was good! and obviously Phillips is great. Just solid comics

Hammet is good. Check out the Continental Op stories, especially Red Harvest.
Chandler is great. Read it in publication order. Farewell My Lovely is my favorite.

Brubaker loves his tropes, so his stuff does get pretty repetitive but never outright bad.
Phillips has been pretty consistent over the years. There was a video by Strip Panel Naked about how the colouring really changes his work (eventually concluding that flatter = better for his style), but I think the video was flawed because it started at around 2000 instead of his very early work under DC (Mature Readers/Vertigo), which was all flats.

It's been a long time since I looked at it, but I think that was one of the conclusions. All the work was compared to My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, which was his newest thing in 2018.

this is making me wanna dip in and check his current stuff out just to see how it is. Seems like he's got a graphic novel trilogy with Phillips that's like a detective story and an online book with Marcos Martin about a character who's like the best friend of a child detective coming home from college for the winter and bad stuff happening. Neither sounds bad really, the online one is pay what you want so that's cool

I did wanna read Pulp but haven't gotten to it yet

Honestly, the show just works better when its a trio. It gives the Doctor a second character to bounce off of, and the sidekicks can have different narrative roles.

Also, it helps combat the shipping element that hollows out the new series so often.

I found those new criminal issues to be pretty great, pulp & reckless are kinda meh.
Did find it enjoyable he and phillips refused the huge substack grant to keep continue doing what they do, must be in a real good place financially.
