Yesterday I was reminded this exists. So should I go back to ignore it or is there at least a little something of value to find in it if I give it a fair but realistic try?

The first season of LD, to me, feels a lot like the first season of Bojack Horseman.

The first few episodes were fumbly and predictable, establishing some characters and going through some standard sitcom tropes.

Later in the season, the characters subverted those tropes, grew some depth, and found some emotional footing through a realistic dynamic. Still not an *excellent* show, but growing better every day.

If LD follows in the same battern as BJ, they'll only really start hitting the mark in season 2. And that is a show I am excited to see.

They're nothing alike. LD plot construction is honestly nothing special, it follows the exact same formula as most comedy-adventure cartoon shows. There's more similarities between Gravity Falls and LD than something like Rick and Morty. I'm not even sure if it's okay to call Lower Decks adult animation, since it shows far more restraint than other shows of that genre. Aside from occasional gore and bleeped out swearing, it's pretty much a PG-13 show.
You're gonna say "so this is what you want Star Trek to be? A run-of-the-mill modern western cartoon?" And my answer is yes. That's exactly what I wanted from Star Trek in a long, long time. A fun cartoon set in the world of Star Trek. A dumbed-down version of the concepts present in the franchise that can introduce it to a whole new audience. I think it's going to be rather successful among teenagers and young adults.

It’s fine, the first three episodes are genuinely insulting if you’re a trek fan but it manages to claw its way up to almost amusing. The hate it gets is from the shills who talk about nothing other than te waifus and how impressive the thread numbers were, they pretty much ruined the trek general on tv. Considering they're apparently the same age, that would mean Mariner would have to at least be in her mid 30s at the youngest. Barring a contrived set of coincidences that test your suspension of disbelief by commissioning a cadet with an attitude problem and history of defying authority as the captain of the most prestigious and advanced ship in the fleet, there's no way you'd have a 20-something captaining a starship.

I'd have to agree. California class ships are said to be designed for maximum utility. They're workhorses who do a bunch of grunt work and aren't supposed to be sleek and state of the art. Considering the NCC numbers we see on some of them, they're probably a really old design that still gets built and fielded decades later like the Miranda and Excelsior.

It's kind of hilarious that shipyards and promo materials tried to make a big deal out of how McMahan designed the ship with a mind for "real" engineering and lots of Lore knowledge in mind...

When it's got the engineering section completely cut off from everything and requiring personnel to go through one of the struts and completely through a nacelle.

And then they had the balls to say that people's problem with this concept was the idea of diagonal turbolifts and not the obvious structural and logistical nightmares the design presents.

I guess the idea is that the "lower decks" (i.e. the Ensigns we focus on) are literally separated from the bridge officers and rest of the ship. At least I'd assume that was the intention. At least the Oberth has a section of deck that could allow for movement without going straight through a nacelle.

The Oberth is actually too small to house its stated number of decks when properly scaled and it's pylons too narrow to fit a turbo lift, much less one that needs to fit through a curve. The Cerritos might not have a good design, but it's got enough space to be functional. The Oberth simply doesn't work.
