Anon, have you ever heard the phrase "it's about the journey, not the destination"? The fun comes from seeing how the new invention and new evil plot end up playing out and intertwining with eachother, ntm that the show actually does play with the formula in creative ways, and that the show has a great sense of continuity letting you see the characters gradually develop despite the formula's limitations.
As for your last two sentences, A] who actually cares about how long the summer really is it's a cartoon, and B] the kids never intentionally hid it from their mom, it was always out of their control. They showed off to their dad and grandparents tons, and they assumed the mom knew just like they did.
