There have been no good arena shooters since UT2K4.
All the ones he list are deeply flawed in one way or another, and he misses the fucking point.
QL was very popular when it was free in a browser, before ID took it down and then put it on steam for tenbux
Toxikk had no marketing and was just a crappy indie UDK game that was just "UT2K4, but in UT3's engine, with no shock combos."
Reflex was "Quake 3 CPMA but you have to pay $10 for it and make the maps again."
UT4's prealpha was dropped by epic and went through so many iterations and none of them were good.
QC happened and it was a complete piece of shit in countless ways. I'm sure you've seen the pastebin already.>>473014827
The market space is different now. It should have LAN connectivity just so embarrassing freezes don't happen at a fucking LAN tournament, but that doesn't have much to do with popularity these days.
The bottom line is most of the would-be-afps-audience is playing something else now. Back when they were popular, ASSFAGGOTS didn't exist, "1v1 card games" didn't exist, autochess didn't exist, battle royale didn't exist, etc... (though desu, I did play UT'99 in last man standing mode on big maps and that was basically battle royale. but not like how it is today.) But yeah. Most of my duel friends tried broodwar, tried cs, tried comp tf2, found some other "competitive" fix...
the reality is that most of the competitive 1v1 audience isn't wasting their time with AFPS at this point because the competition is elsewhere.
