It's appeal to vocal minorities actually isn't the reason the story is so shit.
The entire SJW ranting is blown way the fuck out of proportion by those who don't even really fucking play the game and just meme about some trannies and "GW1 IS SO MUCH BETTER DOOOOD".
GW2 lacks any sort of sane character development across the board, this makes it exceptionally difficult to latch onto any character when they aren't really doing anything the entire time. Sure things happen to them, but that's the extent of their personality. Maybe the personality system was supposed to at one point deal with this, but has since been scrapped.
The story jumps around in an exhausting timeline, this isn't a problem in single player games where quite typically you're playing a linear path that is broken up, but in an MMO that's kind of insane. The maps are stuck in time, but they add in some npcs/dialogue that aren't. The personal story is stuck in time but is so fucked due to since-launch changes that it's annoying. Raids operate on their own timeline telling what I think is the best story but again it's yet another jump in time. It's just exhausting.
And then come the dialogue, which isn't helped by the abysmal voice acting (except for scarlet funny enough), GW as a series has ALWAYS struggled with this, but in GW2 the youngsters of GW have grown up and expect more. Balthazar and Lazarus are two prime examples of people who I should fear, but don't because they're spouting cheesy shit and the game is in a constant 'should i be a romcom or not' mode. I largely suspect this is because development times are so short they don't get to progress much past the first rough draft.
Overall, it's an incohesive mess of young adult fiction, timeline jumps that don't make sense due to infrastructure, and rushed development.
