Listen up /v/, here's the definitive, actual reason that BotW is so divisive, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise:
"It doesn't follow the Zelda formula"
Every Zelda game minus the first (worst) one has a linear path of progression that lets the game gradually build the sense of challenge, letting you do dungeons in order of increasing difficulty, layering on mechanics and required combinations of items until you finish the game. Letting you do ANYTHING in ANY order appeals to the iceberg-depth IQ drooling openworld fags, but surprise surprise, it doesn't let them do fucking anything with the Shrines since the game has to assume each shrine could be the literal first one you've ever walked into, and all the activities leading up to each Beast is so shallow.
The absolute retardation of the story considering -Link- would leave four mechas running around while he goes straight to Hyrule Castle with shit gear to pander to the "GUYS CHOICE LMAO" retards aside, it relegates every possible activity to 'side quest', which in an action-adventure series like Zelda, is just a bad move. Don't get me wrong, taking different spins on the Zelda formula is fine, but this isn't a OoT > Skyward Sword type of progression, it's Fallout 2 > 4, ie. a weird, too-big sequel that fails to capture what was actually right with the series. Even fucking CD-I, fucking C D I got closer to Zelda than BotW did, at the end of the day.
