I have read Whispers In Darkness that Scottish anon recommended. I liked a bit, but I disliked how the protagonist ignored one hundred red flags. Still, it helped me get even more in the mood for the CYOA.
However, I like the CYOA especially not as a “survivor of cosmic horror simulator”, but as a “wizard simulator”. I think this CYOA serves as one of the best “wizard simulators” there is. Magic is dangerous, but rewarding, it’s not omnipresent, and it’s mysterious but can be controlled and be used with reason. It’s not over the top. It incentivizes investing in other aspects of being a wizard then just pure magic power. And it’s in a “mundane” setting.
>Pursuer: Magic Beast
I think it would be much easier to deal with a physical enemy that can’t under normal circumstances conspire with humans.
>Provocation: Botched Ritual
This is a wizard build after all, sometimes rituals fail while experimenting. Also, it helps that it gives 1 extra magic.
>Further Complications: Neighborhood watch; Experimental Procedures
I’m a wizard, and dealing with the general ignorant population shall always be a routine. Yet, in some senses, I fear them more than monsters. However because of this, I shall prepare myself more to deal with them too.
>Hideout: Stylish Apartment (extra artifact)(Hiding in plain sight)
In part I wished to take the mansion, but the stylish apartment in the middle of the city will be both much harder to access for my magic beast nemesis and if it tries it will draw a lot more attention too. Hiding in plain sight will also help with the previous choice.
I’m a wizard.
>Skills: Occultism; Smooth Talking.
I’m a wizard, how could I neglect the study of occultism? And shaping the beliefs and thoughts of how others perceive reality through words is one of the most basic forms of magic, so Smooth Talking comes naturally. Smooth Talking also should be very synergetic with Hiding in plan sight.
