I need some help.
I'm going to be DMing for a campaign in a few days, and my players have sent me their backgrounds. Since I have the time, I wanted to design a few custom backgrounds for the characters who had backstories that didn't quite fit the ones in the Player's Handbook. For example, the Apothecary's son is getting proficiencies in Medicine, Nature, Healer's Kits, and Herbalism Kits
I'm having trouble with designing a background feature for one of them though: a Farmer's son who fucked off and started learning from the Village blacksmith instead. The Skill and Tool proficiencies were easy enough; I just gave them one Skill and one Tool that fit with each job. The background feature is giving me trouble though; I'm going to offer to let the player choose between a farming-themed one and a smithing-themed one.
The problem is that I'm having trouble coming up with an appropriate smithing-themed background feature. I'm just not sure what I can offer that would be good for character interactions.
Does anyone have any ideas that would work?
