The big pharma companies aren't the only ones that can do research. Various countries that have highly government subsidized healthcare systems can & do fund plenty of medical research, and would have no incentive to keep it secret. I am sure some bean-counter at the UK's NHS would love to have some cheap cancer-cure, so that they can spend more on Muslim-outreach programs. Or consider the Chinese; I am sure that their top Party members don't like dying from cancer, and have gotten plenty of Chinese researchers into western pharma companies to steal their R&D. And once the info was in China, some General or such would start selling the cure on the sly to make a quick buck.
And even within the United States, there is a large, wealthy, and politically connected group that would love to see an easy cancer fix. The health insurance companies. They hate having to shell out for long, expensive illnesses that are difficult to predict who they will occur to, and have inconsistent costs. Especially since with the ACA they can't deny pre-existing conditions, and can easily end up with someone needing a $$$$ worth of treatment who hasn't paid them a dime before hand. I would be immensely surprised if the large health insurance companies weren't doing corporate espionage program, that would uncover any miracle cures, among more mundane information (like the true manufacturing cost of a drug, or how much other companies are paying, ect.)
