technically they are promiscuous and don't form long term bonding pairs, however, they have a very strong mother-child relationship, caring for their young for a few years, and not ovulating during that time. The males will call out for the females, who if females will seek the males.
Gorillas are also technically promiscuous, however, the strongest gorilla tends to be the only one that gets to mate, forming something similar to an elephant seal harem.
A gorilla is required to be very large in order to compete for the most females. Their size is purely for the benefit of interspecies combat.
Chimps are very promiscuous too, they have a male hierarchy, and are sexually dominant over females.

I make the hypothesis that humans probably have a similar mating habits as chimps, except after finding a partner (through hypergamy) they will tend to pair bond to ensure productive reproduction, since chimps have so much distrust they will kill their young.
