The speed of light is the maximum speed at which anything can travel in space - including electricity.
Atoms interact with each other via electrical charges.
If you were to travel at half the speed of light, these interactions would happen only at half speed. If you were to travel at exactly the speed of light, these interactions would cease to happen - making it appear as if time has slowed down and eventually stopped for you.
