i'm doing work practice problems right now and I keep running into strange issues with the angles that forces are applied to because i set my reference frame up incorrectly, i'm pretty set with the formulas but i feel like the reference frames and some of the trigonometry is what the bulk of my studying should go towards.

sounds like your issue is you making mistakes with geometry, alg and trig, not with physics.

yeah I think you're right, i'm going to try seeing if drawing figures helps me set up better references frames and if it doesn't i have to go practice trig

i came first in my class in my bsc and msc in theoretical physics and the thing i struggled with most was classical mechanics. the only cure is to do all of the examples in goldstein

Please post a picture of the way you set up your cordinate system. I know I struggled with this a lot, made me have to think about whether it's sin or cos constantly for example

Yeah you set it up just right. This would make your friction force, normal force and potentially dragging force (along the plane) easy to calculate. You will need to apply trig for the mass force though. I can't give you any good tips to remember whether it's cos or sin though, you just gotta do a lot of examples and always have it in your mind

With rotating coordinate systems, the helpful tip my prof and TAs recommended was to think what if the angle is zero? What if it's 90? That helped me nail down my sines and cosines.

I would put some effort in early on statics because if you nail statics then dynamics will become very easy. Something I realised too late is that a lot of the same principles and calculations are identical to statics, so the stronger you are at statics the easier dynamics will be (which was more challenging if you ask me)
