If we can't develop FTL travel that safely moves from point A to point B, then there are two alternatives:
1. Die on earth.
2. Become a nomad civilization.

As time progresses, most if not all points in space will at some point experience some sort of event that would be hostile to life (supernova, traveling black hole, debris or whatever etc. .), so the only way to survive as a species (yes I recognize that we would evolve over the eons), without FTL travel is constantly traveling through space and harvesting resources from here and there as we go, continue reproducing more of ourselves, and spreading out throughout not just the galaxy, but the universe, in massive fleets of space stations.

The 'time dilation' seems a convenient excuse to a terrifying implication. Seems that anyone other than NASA or USSR origin space programs have severe trouble in maintaining contact with craft.

We won't ever. It's never going to happen. Even if you circumvented the power problems associated with the Alcubierre metric it has a horizon problem necessitating something slower than light creating a kind of highway for it before it sets off.

Yeah, but there are ways around that apparently. There was a small cottage industry surrounding Alcubierre's paper for a while and someone figured out a way around it.

To my knowledge no solution to the horizon problem has been found, and so long as that problem exists it's not a meaningful FTL drive.

That would certainly be a huge problem as a sip approached the speed of light.

But at FTL "speeds?" Who knows -- does that imply "warping space," and somehow going around the intervening space (and particles and debris)? Since we have no real idea how the magic space drive might work, it is not possible to say what it would involve.

The real resolution to the "BUT IT'D JUST BE A COPY" philosophical debate is you're right but aren't going far enough.
What you're right about is there isn't going to be any magic teleportation of "you" from the original into the copy just because you're identical.
The further step most people miss though is the realization there isn't ever any mechanism for "you" from T-1 to magically teleport into "you" at T-0 either.
Continuity of "self" is an abstraction of convenience, not a real physical process. Buddhist idea of non-self was pretty spot on.

There's no such mechanism and no need for it since it's enough that at each moment there's a very similar version of a person with memories and habits who can carry out the abstract convenience of "self."
No "you" is carried over to the teleporter copy, but no "you" was lost either since none existed to begin with. If the template person were kept alive alongside the copy it would be weird and confound our normal intuitions about "self," but it wouldn't mean the template "self" would be more real than the copy. Neither would have access to read the other's mind or jump into the other's body, but all of this applies as much to the multiple "selves" at different locations along the time axis. Only access would be to memories in both cases.
