Actual surgery is a very minor part of a surgeon's time. First you meet with the patient and try to figure out if surgical procedures are needed and what kind. Afterwards you have to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and determine if you there is a need for further surgical intervention.

Set to start med school in August, already feel like I don’t belong. I googled some of my classmates and so many of them have accomplishments like scholarship recipients, leadership positions, high gpa, double majors, research/pubs, defending thesis, interesting hobbies like photography, drawing. While I have a bottom 10% gpa for admitted students, average mcat for matriculates, no leadership roles, minimal volunteering, no hobbies aside from being /fit/ and browsing 4chinz and plebbit, no research. I feel like I don’t deserve my acceptance.

I'm seeing more and more med schools making the interview/s and extracuriculars being more important than MCAT score and GPA as an admission requirement. All of this MCAT scores "don't outweigh other components of the application and there are no cutoffs for MCAT scores or entrance GPA." stuff. Will the health care sector regret this down the road, or is this to help the perceived shortage of doctors?

It will help by broadening the scope of who can apply to medical school. The MCAT is not a very good predictor of medical school performance anyway and in my country the main component most schools care about is critical analysis and reasoning skills. Some school are also implementing another test called CASPer (basically an autist filter test). These things will ensure that the people getting into medical school have people skills (medicine is a humanistic profession afterall).

Where are you seeing this? Last time I had access to the MSAR (last year) average MCAT scores were the highest they've ever been, and no average GPA for a school I was applying to had decreased.

When everyone is above the national 90th percentile you gotta figure out some criteria that's more substantially different than a 518 vs 519 MCAT or 3.91 vs 3.92 GPA

That autist screens for 525/4.0 automatons without social skills and with delusions of grandeur are useful. From what I've heard GPA is the most predictive element of USMLE Step 1 scores, but even that number doesn't reflect the same amount of effort or achievement for every graduate from every university. And even then the link between Steps and clinical performance outcomes is tenuous at best.

I've seen it on a number of websites for med school admissions, including some IVY league ones.
I also agree with >>10799948, heck my university's med school admission already has the CASPer and is now considering implementing the multiple mini interview system on top of the 2 interviews with admissions and medical department staff. In the summer, the med students attend lessons on interview skills, and then practice with random faculty and public volunteers who act out being diagnosed with cancer, hearing about a dead family member, etc. These sessions are filmed and reviewed.
The way I see it is that the students will learn interview and interpersonal skills over time, build up what they already have. But admissions wants the perfect talker first shot.

The last thing I want to do is defend any aspect of the med school admissions process, but I wonder if part of the reason is the increasing mental fragility of young people. The rates of anxiety and depression among undergrads has shot up in the last few years, and it makes sense for med schools to want to exclude students who are going to require full-time pastoral care to make it through and will still have time adapting to a high-stress profession. I'm a med student in my mid-30s, and it's incredible how many of the students who came straight out of undergrad are either total nutjobs or so sheltered an insecurely narcissistic that they're completely incapable of interacting with patients like normal people.

GPA and MCAT are still the prime components of any application. You have to prove you can handle the academic rigor of medical training and standardized exams. Theres essentially yearly high stakes national standardized testing from start of med school to end of residency no matter what field you go into.

Had a bit too much to drink three weeks ago, and I woke up with my toe hurting. Hurt for a few days and could run and whatnot on it, but it doesn’t hurt anymore. Is there anything I should or shouldn’t be doing?
Also, how do you tell schools you’re stupid and put the wrong hours for something on your primary AMCAS? I severely underestimated my research hours, and I’m worried that’ll affect me when applying to research-focused schools.

It has been a rough few weeks, my father suffered a cardiac arrest and long story short he barely made it in the house to call 911. He survived with minimal heart damage and has an ICD already implanted.He was put on Sotalol, a non selective beta blocker with potassium blocker attributes. From what I have gathered it is a pretty heavy drug and causes severe side effects which my dad is currently having. My dads family has zero history of heart rhythm abnormalities and the doctor told us that they have no clue why he went into ventricular fib after they did some tests. We are currently looking into this drug, and it doesn't feel like the correct choice since they have not clue why he had the arrhythmia. Of course he is still taking it and I urged him to see another doctor if the side effects become too much. Any aspiring cardiologists have any input on this? My dad told me the side effects are getting to a point that he would rather take the chances of having another attack than take the drug he is on.

It's a tough decision to make, going into medicine. My first interest in it was because I found it biologically interesting, back in middle school. In med school I found out dealing with patients and their diseases to be very rewarding. I was led into surgery (in fact urology) by a relative; I even underwent a period in general surgery residency, but quit for a multitude of reasons. Because some people get tired of working long hours and just want an easy life with good pay and low risk. Derm provides this to an extent most specialties can't compete with, aside from ophto, but the latter being a surgical residency can be offputting.

In the US you work as many or as few hours as you want once you finish residency. The difference between FM and other specialties is that there are few urgent/emergent situations that require you to work overnight as opposed to surgery, ICU etc. In any case, I'm sure whoever you were responding to was comparing derm to more rigorous fields than FM. You choose derm over FM for the MONEY.

The TRP tests tend to score a bit low, but going from slightly above average to well over 90th percentile is a huge jump. Doing that in two months would be impressive. The odds are heavily stacked against you, but if you have a high general test-taking aptitude and can study intensively and effectively for the entire time, you might be able to do it.

Quality whole foods are way more important than some magic ratio of macronutrients.

My protein is about 10-20% of calories and I've had no trouble with gains. It's a myth. Moderate and excess protein is bad for your kidneys among other things.

Truthfully I think it was more that the TPR test focused more on stuff that I was weak on.
It was the same when I was doing the Kaplan FLs — I would mostly get 128-129s but occasionally I would just have an off section and get 123-125 on it.

If I were to take the exam in September.. I was focusing mostly on P/S over the summer, but I think I’d switch to focusing more on general stuff and trying to fill any gaps in content that I have.
Thank for for your advice though, I appreciate you being honest, I know so many places they just always encourage people without being realistic.

Went to a doctor with severe lower back pain, he said "yep that's a bulging disc but do an MRI anyway", I did and MRI doctor wrote that there are no pathological changes or bulging discs.
I still do feel pain though, it's bad when I bend over, worse when I bend back, the worst when I transition from bent over to bent back position, pain is sharp as if every time I change position I pinch a nerve.
I'll go to my doctor with in a few days, but in the meantime maybe someone want to check my scan and tell me if there is bulging disc or anything wrong?

I'm actually recovering from malnutrition, so that makes sense. In addition to mentioned symptom my femurs hurt quite a bit when I stress them by walking or jumping on one leg so that really might be some connective tissue and joints failing.

Vaguest advice I can give is get some raw cacao, or chocolate liquor. Very different in content and activity, but both'll be a net benefit. Add some indian sarsaparilla (hemidesmus indicus) and bacopa monierri. Throw some guarana seed in. Dandelion root and leaf, burdock root, for liver health. You'll be good to go superficially and on your way otherwise. As far as fixing your underlying issues, which are probably both biological and psychological.

Get away from wireless devices of course. Studies going all the way back to the early 60's showing you could induce depression and hopelessness with microwave irradiation. The modern summation of which is honestly incontrovertible.

Not really. On average IMGs do perform extremely poorly in the match compared to domestic students, but that's because the vast majority of IMGs are from poor quality Caribbean schools that accept poor quality students. IMGs who are graduates of reputable schools in developed countries tend to perform similar to lower-tier MD and high-tier DO grads. There is certainly a disadvantage to being an IMG, but it's not that extreme.

Anybody doing cardiology or heme/onc? I definitely, want to do some kind of medical specialty but I'm torn.

Ideally I want to stay in academics and heme/onc is both fascinating to me and is perfect for an academic career. But I also like cardiology the physiology is pretty cool and there's still a lot of work to be done in the field.

Goddam, that's some bad advice.

This anon's Dad should NOT stop taking his antiarrhythmics. Yeah, the side effects might be pretty shitty but the alternative is that he gets more shocks from his device. Shocks fucking hurt and they drain the battery. Generator changes carry a 5% chance of infection so you need to be fucking careful to preserve the ICD. The risk/benefit/QoL exchange you propose is not nearly so straightforwards

If the side effects are bad then one can consider a change to something like amiodarone. Beta blockers or calcium channel blockers can also be used to try to suppress the ventricular arrhythmias.

I presume the anon's father had a cardiac MRI and a coronary angiogram. There is the possibility of an underlying channelopathy but the likelihood of this depends somewhat on one's age.
