What is time?

Like, what is it? and don't give me some vague bullshit answer like "time is what keeps everything from happening at once" or some buddist nonsense with that. My teacher does not know what time is and i want to know, we can split the atom but why can nobody just tell me what time is?

Simple answer: We dont know.

No one understands what time is. We think it exists, we can attempt to measure it, but other than that we have no fucking clue.

There's a lot of shit like in science where the answer is still elusive.

A lot of drab dumbshits think they know the answer but they are parroting the non-answers, the place holders, for things we have no real understanding about.

Unfortunately their asshole attitude and failure to realize the limits of their lawn mower maintenance-like intellects give many lay people the impression that "everything is known", when in fact Humanity has barely begun to scratch the surface of knowledge.

They are often Indians or Engineers for some reason.

Just define an equivalence relation of processes that have the same start points and end points in time. Then use this to define an equivalence class of events that have identical start and end points in time. This is basically a formalization of something like the intuitive concept of cooccurrence (i.e. of two events happening at the same time). From here, we can choose an arbitrary equivalence class and use this to construct a standard of measurement. That being said, I obviously havent worked out the details of this, but it seems like you could take it somewhere. It's worth mentioning that there is a subject called temporal logic that investigates the syntactic properties of reasoning about time and even provide a model theoretic interpretation for what such talk "means", but I'm not actually familiar with the results. If I had to guess, they probably use some sort of partially ordered set of "events" or something like that and then they define satisfaction of formulas in the language of temporal logic as capturing some facet of the ordering relations that hold between these "events" (which is very different from the approach I thook above).

So time is a feeling of things changing in and around yourself. See the stuff changing on your screen? See your own hands grabbing the mouse to reply to my post with ">non-vague-bullshit >feelings *pick one*"? That's time.

I know, I know. You expected a more sophisticated definition. But there isn't one, and even if there was, it would still be based on these feelings, because "what is time" is not a scientific question, it is a philosophical one. And philosophy is inherently human and feels-y.

There's nothing complicated about time.
The basic idea is that it's like a time machine that you can travel through at anytime as long as you have enough energy to keep you going.
In this case, we're talking something akin to time travel - where you spend lots of time on places you're already familiar with but have completely different times that are related. When you start your journey through time, you'll get to know a lot more places.
As you go further away and make your way towards the future, what you'll do is you'll probably start to know more and more places. What's funny is, it is very hard to remember in general terms what time is as it's changing all the time. And that's what makes it cool. There's no specific time limit or set direction for how long it will take you to travel back to where you started traveling. Your journey will actually evolve

Without time, there would exist no change. Time is a byproduct of the laws of nature; if the laws of nature did not describe change, there would be no time.

In general people misunderstand what a dimension is and don't understand that they can be easily extrapolated on a hypothetical level, where they play into reality beyond one dimension of time and three of space is where it gets messy, but again let's refer to extrapolation

If you have a 1d line and use 2d space to go from the beginning to end of the line, well, that's what two dimensions does. Similarly if you're standing on a floor (2d plane) and jump to another spot on the floor, to the 2d observer you teleported and they have no idea what the fuck happened. There's no reason, at least mathematically speaking a 4d being can't teleported around the 3d world if such a being exists but again, it's all hypothetical

Look. I understand why we consider time to be the fourth dimension. Time is essentially a sequence of static 3d environments, where a given 3d environment is derived from previous 3d environments.

What I'm trying to get at is that if you imagine reality as a literal "book" of 3d "pages," you have to create a second version of time that represents the flipping of the pages. And so on ad infinitum.

Yes, it is possible if you consider that not every object within a 3d slice requires change. Due to time dilation, some things don't change as often; this is not a symptom of time, but the laws of nature, which calculate changes less often within elementary elements that are under a significant gravitational pull or are moving quickly.

Time is simply the measurement of the thermodynamic process anon. It's the measure of change: its simply a variable constant which changes based on the change in state as entropy occurs in the universe.

Time is a concept manufactured by us humans to keep an orderly and understandable schedule of certain events that have happened in the past, present, or will happen in the future.

The main reason we invented time is because we needed to measure how long we could optimally produce crops before winter frost sets in during the Neolithic age. After that it has been expanded upon to be incorporated into religion, government, and sciences of human civilization.

Time is simply an illusion to keep us sane and alive really. The same concept can be said for the human soul. There's no scientific proof that it exists as a ethereal energy that controls our corporeal bodies but we like to think it's real because we can't grasp our minds around it yet.

Our concept of time to the universe does not exist. The sun wouldn't have concept of time if it were sentient. It would only know events that happen at the present. To a certain degree the universe would understand time as the motion of decay.

maybe the reason science cannot explain these is because science can only describe and not explain why? Perhaps philosophy or theology holds the answers?
