Always be reading, playing something, or trying to understand challenging concepts (challenging to you)
for example, if you play those brain age games you only get better at those games and once you understand those puzzles the challenge is gone and you stop learning. Chess against different opponents (that are better than you) is far superior for increasing 'neuroplasticity' than those games ever could be.
Learn math for math's sake and applied math for things you care about.
Read, read read. Not crap, not magazines, not 4chan, not tabloids or manga or crap like that. Read books on science, history, math, society ect. things that make you think. Reading fiction is good too, especially if it pushes the limits of your vocabulary.
Working through 1 textbook at a time can be really helpful, or free online courses at Khan academy for example.
Very importantly if you do not understand something, read it again and try to understand it, break it up into smaller questions and aspects and try to understand those then the whole concept.
