string theory question! why is it that the worldsheet is described by a two dimensional CFT? is there some motivation for why it must be, or were they just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck?

good link, but from what he says i’m not clear why conformal/weyl symmetry is demanded of the worldsheet theory because something implies that symmetry, or if string theorists just demanded that symmetry “by hand”

Try to construct a string partition function without conformal invariance. It's not hard to see that without it you'll lose tree-level unitarity and get mess like negative norm states, etc.
