Imagine for a minute in a very distant galaxy there is an intelligent alien species that invents a quantum computer capable of instant FTL communication over infinite distances. They're able to communicate in real time with people on other planets, and in theory other galaxies. So they create a network or internet for their people using this FTL communication, but to their surprise when they turn it on they find they're not the only ones using it. They find somehow their network/internet has linked up with a network from an alien species in some part of the universe so far away they don't even know where they're at. Upon booting up their network they find themselves connected to a universal internet that all sapient species in the cosmos are able to communicate with each other in real time FTL communication.
I mentioned they used a quantum computer to do this, but the most advanced computer we humans know of is the brain. It stands to reason if aliens want to invent a powerful quantum computer it'd be something similar to the human brain. Now people say the human brain is a quantum computer. Imagine if the human brain evolved the necessary hardware to connect to this network. In order to function in day to day life most humans would have to have access to it blocked off. Like a firewall with all the ports closed off. Maybe some people open 1 or 2 ports and they gain access to knowledge that appears to give them EPS powers. But what about when that person dies? In theory if they remove the "firewall" entirely they could upload their consciousness to this network and live as a disembodied consciousness.
