Why colonize Mars and make people on its surface suffer from cosmic radiation and micro gravity when there is nothing of economical value on the planet? We are better off drilling into asteroids and make something like pic related.

There's a german short film from 2004 where everybody on Earth is killed by an asteroid and the first team of people on Mars (only 6 people) have to come to terms with their mortality. You reminded me of it.

Because planets have less radiation than space/asteroids, don't have microgravity, and have more types resources and larger amounts of them and space mining doesn't need colonies at all

I mean if we were able to generate an atmosphere that would help filter out radiation.
It would take a while but it would still work.

Is magnetism really a problem though?

I believe I read Venus has no magnetism and its atmosphere is pretty much as thick as Earth's besides the sulfuric rain and the 1000f surface temps of course.

Though it would be pretty fucking scary if it mattered so much because the earth seems to be passing through some magnetic phase and we might lose it for a while at least.

I certainly don't want to die in vacuum because the shitty core decided to do site maintenance.

I think the solar wind blows away the lighter molecules like hydrogen and oxygen leaving heavier chemicals like co2 and sulfur behind on Venus. That's probably why we see majority of outer planets are hydrogen rich.

The rate at which the solar wind blows away the atmosphere is very slow. It is feasible (assuming we had the power to even generate a suitable atmosphere in the first place) to actively sustain the atmosphere. Eventually it might even be possible to artificially generate a magnetic field.

Turns out the moons of Mars are actually the best places in the system for us to build large rotating space stations inside of. Just drill through them and you can fit dozens of these inside of them.

I suppose you'd have to build these in or near an asteroid belt or a gas giant, allowing you to harvest materials for repairs, maintenance, items for the population, etc.

Then you could manufacture a sizable number of defensive ships, slap a large ion drive on one end of the cylinder, you'd have a pretty mobile colony fleet.
