If the universe started with a big bang, what happened before that?

How can anyone say these things with a straight face and imply they make any fucking sense?

At least for quantum mechanics they had the decency of trying to come up with multiple explanations and eventually going for "shut up and calculate" when they realized it was all hand wavy bullshit.
