Have you also considered the fact they commonly share something with all 5 of them? They all copied in the beginning or from an early age to build up mileage and intuition, if there anything I found people with so called talents simply boils down to just mileage and copying a lot and building a visual library along the way while also generally drawing a lot of the same thing over and over again. Funny thing is I also see my own progress after I just did studies of better artist and copying their work all day long while also studying fundamentals skills to execute it better and building a visual library of other things.

Pretty sure Algen shit on black and white studies, and said he regret wasting time on them along with anatomy studies - he mentioned saying figure/gesture pretty much does it.

Nice research op. Let yourself explore art freely, as you can see all of these artists used to create drawings way beyond their skill level at that time. You wont progress if you're stuck at value studies. Draw as if you already have the skills, do studies in the meantime but keep creating and exploring

I kind of agree with algen. The only reason to STUDY black and white is if you're trying to isolate values and work on that. You can absolutely do that, but when you're competent enough at matching values, it's advisable to include the dimension of color to your brushstrokes.

if you want to do concept art, there's a different system you should use.
