At what resolution should I be drawing?

I've been using 2000x2000 only because it was SAI's default.

Does it matter?

Drawing something for real? The larger the better. 8.5x11 is standard piece of paper so generalize from there. Resolution keep it at 200 to 600 doesn't matter unless you're printing.

focus more on the resolution that pixel size itself. for drawings and doodles just do 150-200. for larger works set res to 300, and pixel i would say 5000x4000 or whatever. its not that important in the end. Usually comes more down to what your PC can handle.

See what you get for an A4 at 300 dpi, that should be good enough for most applications. Going larger is only important for specific things, like if you want a high quality print on an A3 format, or 4k background art.

If you don't need to print your works and want to make it simple, my rule is: The shortest side has to be minimum 2160p so it looks good on vertical and horizontal 1080p, 1440p and 2160p screens.

Examples:
Square: 2160x2160

Widecreen: 3840x2160 (recommended for wallpapers and Twitter)
Panoramic: 5076x2160

Instagram portrait: 2160x2700 (locked AR)
Portrait: 2160x3000
18:9 Phone Wallpaper: 2160x4320 (meh, most phones don't reach that resolution, just make suke your protraits look good when they're cropped to that aspect ratio)

Duplicate or triplicate those sizes if you feel they're not enough for you, but don't go lower than that.

What the fuck are you even talking about? If you "bump up the resolution" the dimensions of your canvas in pixels will scale up. Going from a 10 inch by 10 inch picture at 300 dpi to 10 inch by 10 inch at 600 dpi is the same thing as doubling the dimensions in pixels.
