Hamptons is only book you need. Rest is just practice. You wont draw, so it doesnt matter what book you get.

Bought it. It's actually good if you can look past the stylization. It breaks the figure down to primitives pretty well.

Check his professional portfolio - where he's done work for Zootopia and nickelodeon - and take notes, guys.

He's a proof that you don't have to be a master at drawing before picking up professional work.
Drawing is important but composition, visual library and design thinking is just as important.

As for your question OP, no, I don't think it's worth getting. If he was trying to teach you the production pipeline or environment design, I'd splash out on it, but he's serving you his weak points here.

Nothing I haven't really seen before from other books on constructive anatomy (the head construction method in picrelated comes straight from Loomis for example), but the book looks decent enough. It might be good for people struggling with more advanced stuff.

Just do Michael Hampton. It's free to download here somewhere. His anatomy is actually realistic and far more informative than this ugly stylized stuff that's obviously derived from his work.

Hampton is boring and not suited for beginners to learn from. It's full of pointless info, you will never put to use. It's like he intentionally made everything more complicated than it needs to be to show off. OPs book actually looks simple and fun for a change.

This is a hilarious point. I think 99% of people who take hampton and his disciples class fail because of the gesture week. They completely miss the point and go off to do complex poses using the methods presented. Well if you don't do complex poses, or have trouble doing them because the method proposed makes it difficult to achieve said pose, then is it really a method?

I've taken the class (not torrent) and the teacher outright refused to touch any pose that had any level of difficulty. Understanding that perhaps beginners should just stick with basic standing poses using such gestural methods. But when you watch over 100 critiques and the teachers displays a repeating behavior of not touching the pose that actually looks challenging then you begin to question the method itself. Does the teacher know what they're doing? Or can only do a set macro of commands because they're not Hampton themselves thus not knowing the answer themselves? At the point of doing over 1000 gestures (Head, neck, spine breakdown, limbs) it becomes formulaic. Then you realize none of the stuff you're learning is transferable and disposable once you're done learning it.

Then it's back to the loomis advise of making your own blooks. 1/2

How do you handle twisting? Turning? Bending the leg? How do you handle foreshortening? Extreme perspective? How do you know if I'm turning the box at the degree and angle I want? How would you know or can tell what a "pinch" and "stretch" is a pose is going back and front?

A lot of questions and a lot of the techniques thrown out of the door. For what seems to be just a general class on learning the muscles. The constructional methods and teachings of hampton are great but poorly taught to make the learner understand these pain points. 2/3

I'm both. Hampton is great for the simplification of the muscle groups. But God help you if you want to really and truly understand his construction and gesture method. Luckily I had an internet friend show me some box tips and it helped.

To understand simple mannequins you need to know s,c,l line, gesture and how to place each shape in perspective at any angle. If someone in this thread doesn’t know how to do these(they can be tedious to learn) check out peter Han. Houston’s book is also as good or better and Watts videos/Reilly method are great. No reason to get anything else as a beginner for the figure. Vilppu and proko are helpful too. But it’s best to stick with one method of construction and master that. That book wouldn’t teach anything that hasn’t been taught by someone better.
