I'd start with copying stuff, both drawings and paintings, and when you have a good eye for proportions start studying from books. Bridgman is pretty good for beginners to get the main masses, do some gestures to get the hang of them. Then you could start studying more detailed anatomy from Vilppu, Bammes, Hampton and starting some longer drawings of people. When doing life drawing look at other artists work in similar angle and anatomy books to understand what you're looking at, you can also move around to understand what you see from your angle. Do both fast sketches and long studies, they complement each other, and study anatomy along. Copying master drawings will also expand your knowledge of anatomy and technique. Just don't jump in too hastily and get discouraged, break it down to small steps
