You study realism to practice and learn your fundamentals but they are not limited to it
For the piece you posted, it's not very expressive, the gesture is bad and stiff. If you made these poses into silhouettes would you still be able to read the emotion they're trying to portray? Would you be able to tell what this character is, or what their personality is supposed to be?
This style just looks like they don't know what they're doing in regards to proportion, shapes, and character design either.
I think the idea is okay but the execution is poor
