So, Steve Ahn is reopening his storyboard workshop for June. There’s almost no reviews on this guys’ classes, and the $800 price tag is way too steep to jump into blindly. Anyone been in this, or know of other artists experiences?

Anyways $800 sounds pretty fucking steep for something you could learn from a free or maybe up to $50 at worst book

From what I can gather, the people who buy his courses allegedly say he's bad at English. So the runtime of 3 hours per week is really inflated to cover just how bad he is at basic communication. However he draws a fuck ton in the videos to make up for it.

If you put 2 and 2 together, paired with the fact that it's the facebook crowd buying his stuff who are easily impressed with hot tips for drawing, then one can assume what's going on here. The only way to get a wiff of what's in the course is to lurk facebook and find hashtags of the content.

I have not even the slightest clue how this Steve guy can be so pretentious and get away with it. Not one review online. Not a single 1 minute preview for the asking price. Nothing.

If you want a good storyboard course do the Kris Pearn one on Schoolism first. It was the best course I've taken on the site.

You don't need it. I follow a few pro, employed at big studios board artists and most of them confessed they just winged it and learned on the job, a lot of them still feeling like they have no idea if they're doing stuff right. I
You can even be a beg who traces everything if you do it freelance online. Storyboarding has a much lower skill requirement than other positions it seems.

Absolute scam. Storyboarding is something you learn on the spot, with a few industry connections and by observing. Cartoons have a constant need of storyboarders, and they usually make you start with netflix/low budget for tiny kids cartoons since those have very little more than shot/reverse shot.

A large majority of people in the industry have a degree in art. If they wanted a job in storyboarding at all they would have learned it in college. You really need a portfolio dedicated to storyboarding beforehand as well. Ahn is pretty based for trying to peddle this though.

nah man, there's a lot more to it than you realize.

descriptive drawing for storyboards often takes years to master. it's super hard to get your drawings to read and keep them as simple as possible. this is coming from a guy who is skilled observationally in drawing, but realized that storyboarding is way harder than it seems.

I hear mixed things about it, but a mix between "it sucks" or "it was whatever" type deal.
From what I'm told, the exercise he provides are simply turn arounds for specific bodies.

ie, Draw head facing from left to right.
Then draw said head but looking down.
Same head, look up.
Then add your character. And that's it.
