I've been sculpting a long time, so it's faster for me to grab some sculpty for organic stuff. Mechanical, or buildings, I'll do something quick in Sketchup.
You're also assuming someone can pick up 3D fast, and be good at it. It's a steep learning curve, and a big investment in time, when a chunk of clay can get it done way faster.
Both are valid ways to study something. Pushing for only one? Why limit yourself? I keep sculpty around for that, and also have 3D programs. Both are fine.
