This. Try to keep the energy of the gesture when applying anatomy and perspective. You need to analyze the gesture drawing and see why it was appealing (the relation of the shapes, tangents, size and type of shapes implied). You should also be doing that type of analysis with the art you see that you like.

If you really wanna draw people in perspective in any pose you should probably get some good references and copy a lot.
One does not simply have the power to imagine any pose. There are too many variables (I for example use 3D models sometimes).
You have to build a "database" in your head through practice.
Also consider checking out different viewing angles and it's effects. For example a view of a person from below (the eye level) makes him/ her look stronger. (In cinematography the call that a Low-angle shot)
Another very intersting thing is the "amount of perspective" or some call it FOV (field of view). Just lookup the difference between a fish-eye and portrait-lens(distorsion). Can create some amazing effects.

gonna hijack this thread a little bit and hopefully get a reply before work.

How do I draw a human in perspective at a 3/4ths angle, but from a top-down angle? I'm doing a commission for a friend and he wants a Goku in the pose I described and I could use the weebux but I have no fucking idea where to begin. I thought it'd be easy because it's Dragon Ball but according to Google they've apparently somehow never used this fucking pose so I can't directly reference the source. What would a vanishing point grid look like in order to build off of?

Download Design Doll, and mock up a figure in the exact angle & perspective that you need and use that as a general reference.
