Sometimes I feel lost in the constant sea of grinding/getting gud. But lately I feel like I'm starting to grasp concepts and techniques better, so my art turns out more like how I picture it in my head. I still sometimes feel overwhelmed and demotivated whenever I fail, but I just tell myself not to rush and that learning takes time. I'm definitely better now than I was last year.

I personally can't imagine how you must have felt to attempt suicide, and you're right that you aren't dead yet. Sometimes people who attempt suicide can feel like they've permanently killed themselved in the eyes of those around them, but its important to keep in mind no matter what you did in the past, you're alive here and how. I struggle with this sometimes myself. To me, a human experience is something that should never end and the fact that we age is the greatest tragedy of our universe. Because of that, I find that there's nothing that can really be considered the perfect use of our time. If nothing is the best use of our time, then its best to treat life like anything can be a good use of your time. Do what you want with your life and try and increase your satisfaction, its the only life you have after all.

I disagree Kermit. I think aging and death is a necessary evil that acts as the ultimate equalizer, also time being limited makes time and hence life worthy. I should have provided more details, I feel my art is pointless in the sense that no one enjoys it. That includes me.

That's fair enough, we all have different views on this sort of stuff.
If you're not enjoying your art but still want to be doing art, it's important to take a break. For some people, this means literally not drawing for a bit and finding other outlets to give the brain something new to do, for others, it might just be leaving your comfort zone and doing a different style/subject matter.

I like to phrase these sorts of art ruts as discomfort zones. Even if you don't like what you're doing since it's what you've been doing it can feel like this is all there is to art. Stepping out of that zone into something new can make it all seem more in-perspective.

I was stagnating a lot this year and mindlessly grinding, spinning my wheels.

About a month ago I just said "fuck it" and decided to have more fun with drawing, just focusing on feeling those forms instead of being too rigid about everything, and the results look a lot more presentable.

Not *good*, but a step in the right direction I think.

The same thing happened to me earlier in the year. I started paying attention to what I was drawing rather than just thinking about the outline and I improved. Glad to see you're also getting better anon.

Anyway, this year has been pretty well in terms of art, I got my hands on Clip Studio Paint and it's been a blast learning it. I really wanna try learning animation too!

Back in march I got closer with my online friends and it's been so good for me in terms of art, their support really helps me feel like every drawing I post is loved. I know it's not about the numbers, and mine aren't even that large but getting that confidence has given me more hope for art as my career.

I got published for the first time recently. Nothing huge, just a regional comic zine. I've got another 2 page spot in a local one coming out next month. It feels really good, surreal almost to open these things and see my work in there.

Spent a year and a half fumbling with my tablet, practicing until my hand was sore and still hating what I was drawing. Then a few things happened:

>I started studying Hampton for hours on end, though my understanding of the form is still not 100% perfect, it's improved noticeably and I'm better at drawing not just humans but all creatures
>I started to understand perspective and the illusion of depth in art
>I drastically lowered the resolution of my art, it's nearly pixel/oekaki now, which makes lines way easier to analyze (and /ic/ anons said it looked soulful)
>I started heavily stylizing my work with my own vibes
>I streamlined my working process, customized my tools and shortcuts to make editing quick and second nature

There's a mythical ideal I had in my head when first getting into art, that I'd eventually be able to draw anything that came to mind - if not amazingly, then "good enough" - and I'd be free to pursue my creative ambitions, improving further along the way.

I think it's safe to say that I'm at that point now - I finish a sketch and instead of thinking "christ this looks horrible" I think "this is coming along well and I should keep working on it". That puts me in a good mood, which is rare.

Too bad the times have changed, it's not the 70s anymore.
I think I'm romanticizing him but he's the guide I needed to keep going. I think I finally achieved peace when it comes to art and when I am actually drawing I am content with everything. All my worries and all my problem sit outside of the time I spend making art which is better than I hoped things could get.
I won't watch the biopic.

Things going well, contacting other big content creators on twitter helped me a lot. Ive hit 300 likes and followers recently, support from irl frens, parents and gf helps a lot as well, doing a comic and i hope to enroll art school next year.

That's like twice backwards.. twice as evil But I've seen that unfortunately. And with the underlying pride of that type of thing, like all pride, it steals from another to give to yourself. Demeans suffering, excuses torture even.

Be very careful with that thinking positively of yourself.

Pride and love are opposites. Many people get confused between the two, it's easy to do. Pride separates people, it's social vying, fighting, it's jealousy, cliques, tribalism, it's exclusion. Love is open, kind, forgiving, all inclusive. Think about it, if you, as an artist simply love what you do, no taste or skill level matters does it? It's just all different people with their own strengths and weaknesses in different situations. Jealousy doesn't even make sense, you simply want to share. Share in the good, and share in the burden of the bad.
A lot of people take that pride/love/positivity all as part and parcel of the same constructive thing. But it is not at all. And the destructiveness of this mistake can't be overstated.
Nothing done in pride is a net positive. It is the greatest lie. But even if you can't swallow that, then nothing done in pride can't be made better by doing it in love.

Interjecting but this is part of what I was talking about. That's the wrong kind of inspiration anons. No matter what, living by external standards is equivalent to putting shackles on your own creativity. It's cheapening yourself, as well as setting yourself up for failure.

Please stand on your own legs anons! I promise it's worth learning to walk without a crutch! Crutches fail you when things get tough. Legs bruise and break but can take you anywhere!
