If it's done to make the characters feel more authentic, it passes

A writer who has to base characters on themselves to make a believable character (not to be confused with a writer who uses aspects of themselves to create original characters) is the mark of a shit writer, and this is coming from a writer who self-inserts all the time.

It’s not so much that people who frequent these threads are fantastic writers, it’s more that the writers are shit at building up anything. There was no build up to buff frog leaving and when buff frog finally did get an episode, it was still more focused on Tom and stars relationship which is bs. The shipping was good in moderation, now that it’s pretty much at the forefront I’m sick of it, aswell as the break neck speeds at which the plot is progressing

To a certain degree, lots of writers inject bits of themself into every character they write, write when you know and all that.

It's when you start writing a character that has your entire personality, set of interests, appearance, and god forbid name, then it's serious cringe material.

In reality that young artist had been heavily inspired by them...and was utterly crushed when someone sent them the discord messages of their hero reaming them up and down.

Some other fanartist who was inspired by her did their own AU in a similar art style, except it was Tomstar. Which is pretty much gravityfying's least favorite ship. Apparently gravityfying and some other fans hated it and called it a ripoff in a private discord, saying stuff like this other girl's adult Tom was just gravity's adult Marco with horns added. And frankly gravity had a point about that. But the conversation got leaked and the other girl got really upset about how her hero hates her art.

Nah, there shouldn't be a kiss photographed by the booth for Tom to see. That wouldn't take any effort from the writers.
What should happen is that Star's sad about not being a Butterfly princess, and the booth frequently takes pics while Marco & Star can't hear anything outside but Tom can hear inside.
Marco should be sickeningly sweet and so obviously better for Star that it just breaks Tom emotionally without him even getting cucked, marking the midpoint of a sad Tom arc.

Yes. Glossaryck saved one piece of magic that he kept pure and away from Toffee's taint, so Star would be able to get to it if she dipped down and gave her all to empowering it.

The thing is, the unicorn she created grew rapidly without any proper training. In Storm the Castle, despite it being a funny scene, the unicorn that runs the mill in the bell stated his mother trained him for when it was his turn to power the wand.

Since the new unicorn Star created doesn't just run the wand, but is literally the source of all magic and the spellbook, with all of its key informatio, is burned, Glossaryck is now retarded since he has nothing solid to latch on to.

Seriously the only ones who care about Tomstar pretty much are a few girls on tumblr who like it because "Tom is hot!" and self-insert as Star, and the Starco haters who only "care" because they see it as a mechanism to keep Star away from Marco and will immediately move on to something else once it runs its course.

The biggest obstacle to making anybody else care isn't even that most of the audience wants Starco and sees Tomstar as just an obnoxious delay, though most fans do see it that way. It's that TOM IS FUCKING BORING WHEN HE'S WITH STAR. The only good Tom scenes are the ones without Star in them. And this season Star's been in every Tom scene.

If i have to take a guess, it's because they are building up a moment to make the starco/tomstar triangle moment, which it's seems it will be in booth buddies where Star & Marco gets trapped and the plot mentions wedding, you can't get more romantic than that.

It's a shame because to build the tomstar moment to contrast starco, not only it gave bad signals, it consumed the buff frog episode too, and no one gave a fuck that the monsters abandoned Mewni because they focused on the shipping instead.

Eye colors actually played a big part of the way Anon's magic worked within our story.

Rather than have his power flow through the wand, he received the boon of magical energy from a patron god/goddess. A mysterious but benefactual being by the name "Luna" who spoke to him through a book.

Her power, and magical energy was represented with an alien pink glow, and she created his Monster Arm along with Anonymous after his real was mangled off by a nightmare creature from her dimension! How exciting!

His pink eye, was the result of the players making decisions that aligned with Luna, or as she referred to her self "Mommy's" will and eventually both were going to turn pink eventually, but the players later caught on that their soul was GOLD with a black center like an eclipsed sun.
Or "Son" depending on the situation.

This created a divide, and left Anon someone split. Forcing him to eventual reconcile his relationship with power as a whole.

It also left him with Heterochromia, which disgusts both observers and haha...the universe at large.

Nefcy's world was not, and remains unkind to intruders.

OCs created as fun wordbuilding or next-generation speculation are a bit cringe, but can still be innocent fun. Pic related.

I mean seriously. In Mewni's history we have things like "the Great Monster Massacre" and a queen called "Solaria the Monster Carver", and just in the last generation there was a failed monster rebellion that resulted in Queen Moon and her army hunting the surviving monsters down and leaving them scattered "without country or leadership." None of that causes them to leave and look for another planet to live on. But a party gets attacked by a psycho who doesn't even kill anybody and gets driven off by the Mewman authorites, and that's the last straw? Weak.

Especially since calling the party a "failure" is a stretch when it really did result in new friendships between monsters and influential Mewmans.

Even back in season one it showed monster oppression much better. The Great Monster Massacre is not only a historical event, its a holiday celebrated by the Mewmans that all the monsters in Ludo's castle are unnerved by and Star says that on this day they have magic eyes sent to instill fear in monsters and remind them of this day. Both of those are 5 second throwaway gags in season one and its more convincing than the entire focused plotline of season three.

It matters because it makes the mods start to view the not-sveg threads as troublemakers. Repeatedly breaking the rules and needing posts deleted and getting threads nuked can lead to them just deciding that Star vs are gonna get harsher treatment and the threads will start to get nuked on sight, which no-one wants to happen.

Ongoing non-topic specific threads like this with something recognisable in the title are usually tolerated as long as we stick to the rule of making a new thread only once the old one is past bump limit and has sunk to page 10.

Starting to make new threads and migrating to those while the old one hasn't even hit bump limit will be seen as cluttering the board and will without doubt draw the ire of the mods. First posting lewds on a blue board persistently, not learning from one comic getting nuked but posting another till the whole thread is nuked, and then in the next thread deciding that it's boring and starting a new one after 200 posts?

It's asking for a fight, and fighting with the mods doesn't end well because they can literally just decide to not allow any discussion of the show if it gets bad enough

A while back people used to use the game systems or simplified game systems on /tg/ to play games. I'd say 2 was the most lore-heavy.

This season spins its wheels way too often now and the lore we get recently tends to be confirmations of things already implied: ex. "monster" is an arbitrary term, Heinous is related to the Butterflys (was obvious but not confirmed), etc. Like the entire first week of the last bomb we got no real lore despite that beginning the current arc; it was just everyone fucking around about domestic/shipping shit. Compare to S2 starting off with the double feature of My New Wand/Ludo in the Wild.

There's some new lore, like Eclipsa herself, if Star being royal is relevant, Glossy pretending to be retarded, and more like meme theories to enjoy like Marco cheek marks.
Problem is the execution of them, for example the monsters lore as this problem of happening off-screen and focusing other characters instead.

I'm not saying there's no lore; just that there was more of it last season. It felt like pretty much every half-hour of S2 tried to expand the universe of the show in some way that would be actually relevant later (as in, not every individual segment that season would, but usually at least 1 out of 2 in a single half hour would).

For 3 there's more attempts at overt plot progression in each episode by comparison, but less actual lore: yeah, Demoncism/Sophomore Slump progress the plot and that's fine, but we're not really learning anything so much as just watching stuff play out. There's barely even any magic use now. I'm not actually saying there must be constant lore, but there's too much of a relationship/shipping focus now and it feels like it's drowning out lore, action, interest, etc.

Heinous totally counts as lore in 2 just through being an apparent non-Butterfly character with markings that she tries to hide, and wasn't a joke character in 1.

Though it seems pretty clear that it was written as the original ending of S2, if they hadn't gotten a season 3, and so the difference in lore between that and the rest of the season is pretty clear. Scent of a Hoodie/Rest in Pudding is comparable to the beginning of S3 for beginning the new arc, and yet gives much less "lore," if any, than the beginning of the S2 one.

So yeah, some might not consider some of this lore, but I guess the definition I'm working under is "stuff that expands a viewer's knowledge of how the show's universe works and concepts within it + certain concepts/information established that turn out to be essential to the plot as the story progresses." Gonna approach S3 the same way based on what we know by now, meaning there could end up being more by the season's end.

I feel like people really downplay just how much S2 set up because of the existence of lame episodes like All Belts Are Off or Pizza Thing or whatever, but there really is a ton of lore that season.

Season 3 has very heavy plot, with storylines running directly from episode to episode, but "lore" doesn't show up as often.
Season 2's plot was always present but not addressed as frequently, but had a number of episodes dedicated to worldbuilding, giving us information that didn't directly influence the plot (at the time) but gave more context or insight into it.

I want to disagree but I can't really, most of the broader Mewni cast are flat or one-off characters who never did anything but be a dick to Marco. The broader Earth cast were at least generally likable and we had two seasons to get to know them, I can't see an episode near the level of Collateral Damage coming from Mewni's squires or another equivalent.

I'd still say the main and major supporting cast are all generally strong characters and most can work in either setting (all of them could, if the writers wanted) but even then the Mewni side has lost or underused a ton of great characters this season (Toffee, Glossaryck, Ludo and now Buff Frog). They gained Eclipsa but we've still hardly seen much of her, Heinous became more interesting but her characters is likely becoming something completely different, Kelly got major intro billing and is being pushed with Marco but she's still barely showed up this season and we still know next to nothing about her.
In exchange for this we lost basically all of the Earth-bound supporting cast, most notably Jackie who at least got a great send-off. Hard to say it was worth it, so far.

16. Festivia was rando swapped out with Meteora and so Star/Moon/etc. aren't related to Eclipsa, MHC was complicit, confirms cube as interrogation method, implication of how cheek marks work
17. plot progression

To me it feels like while the plot is progressing more, we've learned less about the universe than 2 established. Especially when considering BfM as separate from the rest of the season, as it was the conclusion to the S2 arc. Feels like recent episodes just try to build off the worldbuilding that exists and less frequently go for more.

New lore revealed in episodes of this season naturally counts as lore for this season, you're being intentionally stupid in order to complain more.

All lore is an "extension" to the world and the setting established in se01ep01. Since Battle of Mewni, we've gotten a shitload of new lore, like Young Moon and her conflict with Toffee, how magic works in the world, more about the other kingdoms and how they all relate to each other, Eclipsa appearing as something other than a silhouette inside a crystal, Heinous being Meteora, the MHC cover-up. It's a lot.

Heinous wasn't a joke character in 1, but became one in 2 (she was certainly treated more seriously than Ludo in her first appearance).

All I was saying was that S2 has more lore for introducing these characters/concepts and hinting at their importance in the first place. The lore still counts for this season, but the introduction counts for S2.

We still don't know much about this, and arguably learned more about how magic practically works in Season 2 with the explanation about Dipping Down, Star actually making a real effort into learning to use her messed up wand and new spells, introducing the Butterfly Form as an extension of Dipping Down, introducing the Magic High Commission and the roles they play, and seeing how "the Fritz" gradually deteriorated things over the season. Season 3's major contributions have been the revelation that there is an actual "Realm of Magic" from which (presumably) all magic in the universe originates, that Star recreated it in her own image (to some extent), and that the Wand is (probably) responsible for making the Butterflys what they are rather than any natural aptitude.

We hardly know any more than was already established in the guidebook, but just within the context of the show I think it's silly to call having the cast travel to new settings and having them meet new characters "lore." Introducing the Pigeon Kingdom and Rich Pigeon as a character isn't "lore," the implication that they got that kingdom by conquering an existing Mewman kingdom is.

The fact that Eclipsa was "still alive" was a huge lore reveal. The equivalent this season would be if Ludo had Toffee's skull in his closet instead of Star and Marco dolls.
Star meeting Eclipsa as a person isn't "lore," it's Eclipsa graduating from a character described in lore to an actual character who is an active part of the setting.

But you could just as well insist that all of Toffee's stuff for example was actually carry over from season 1 throughout the show and shouldn't be counted into s2 lore at all. It really looks like you're trying to find any reason to not count all the stuff we got in season 3, because we've seen the character before so all these new revelations about who they really are doesn't count as new information, which is ridiculous. You know, like discounting everything to do with Eclipsa because we'd heard of her and seen her tapestry earlier, so the whole corruptive deal with Moon, the Meteora and the Butterfly line not being unbroken cover-up, seeing how she is in the flesh, all that can be handwaved away because you know we saw her tapestry so she's old news.

My argument is that people are discounting the lore we got in S2 just because the follow-through/revelations to it occurred in S3, despite the fact that said revelations would make no sense without the setup from the previous season.

I pointed out all the lore I can think of for both seasons. I'm just saying that Moon and Toffee and Eclipsa being alive was known long before we knew anything about S3, and thus isn't more lore than we got before or lore specific to that season the way it was for S2 compared to S1, when we legitimately knew none of that.

I didn't make the post you're responding to, but as the anon posting about lore in this thread I have never been arguing that stuff doesn't count but that S2 stuff counted first and yet seems to get ignored.

My argument has always been that for some reason S2 lore is treated like it isn't lore, as seen by the assumption in this thread that S2 must have less lore than S3 by default. I'm just trying to show that's not true.

We already knew Heinous was evil.
Something obviously happens to Moon at the end of "Tough Love" but we can't say who is responsible or what exactly happens.
Maybe Eclipsa backstabs her, maybe Meteora goes berserk and takes both of them out, maybe the MHC shows up guns blazing and tries to freeze them all.

I'll be pretty disappointed if it turns out Eclipsa was just plotting to get her daughter back on the throne this whole time though, wouldn't make any sense with how she's acted up until now. I'm sure she's up to SOMETHING but that would be really boring.

Literally nothing in the show hints to this at all. Star just finally learned to manage her crush over Marco for the sake of their friendship. Remember that Marco was totally freaked out by Star's confession and Ruberiot's song. As far as Star knows Marco has no interest in her. All Star has done was get over the awkwardness.

Some Starco shippers were expecting that episode to be full Tomstar breakup and when it wasn't they started despairing again.

I mean sure, it did show that Tom is putting some actual effort into being a good boyfriend (in his own surprisingly insecure and dorky way)...but it also shows that Star's NOT putting any particular effort into being his girlfriend and barely knows Tom despite dating him for months now and having previously dated him for some undetermined period of time when they were 13. Even basic things like his taste in food are surprising to her. Then followed up by highlighting that she knows Marco better than anybody. And also slipping in a mention that she still finds him attractive.
